About the Artist

Born on August 28th, 1972, Wendy Joseph--now known in his community as Don Wendy el pintor---grew up in Grant Rivier, Haiti. In October 1991, at the age of 19, Wendy became a political refugee, fleeing chaos after a coup put the violent military back in power in Haiti.

Wendy found refuge on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, in the province of Puerto Plata, working construction struggling to make ends meet. Seeking another alternative for income, Wendy studied with an instructor named Francios, believing that "God sent me an instructor...who taught me to paint."

Wendy has been a professional painter for 25 years and was featured in the month-long exhibit "Harmattan" in Greenwich Village, New York. Wendy's style of art includes abstract, realism, and expressionism. Wendy views his artwork as a lens for the western world to see and understand the plight of Haitian migrants.
